The committee approved a resolution authorizing the county’s Natural Resources and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) department to update shoreland zoning maps administratively in situations where the county board—s prior approval would only confirm the action of another body or agency.
Jamie Ludovic, chief community development officer, said staff encountered situations where more current maps maintained by other agencies — for example DNR wetlands data or municipal annexations — were more up to date than county layers and that this inconsistency created confusion for constituents seeking permits. He said the county attorney, the land-use manager and the land information officer developed the resolution to allow prompt updates to county regulatory maps and to require reporting of administrative edits back to the committee and County Board at least annually.
Jamie said the change does not alter substantive policy or create new regulation; rather, it is intended to keep county GIS and regulatory maps timely and to reflect annexations and other changes that have already been determined by responsible jurisdictions.
The committee approved the resolution by voice vote with no public objections recorded at the meeting.
