Commission recommends removing neon tubing from allowed downtown signage

The Planning Commission voted to recommend that City Council amend Section 9.6.0.302(c) of the North Augusta Development Code to remove neon tubing from allowed signage in Downtown Mixed Use 1 and 2 districts.
The North Augusta Planning Commission voted to recommend that City Council approve a text amendment to remove the allowed use of signs constructed of neon tubing in the Downtown Mixed Use 1 and Downtown Mixed Use 2 zoning districts.
Tommy Paradise, planning staff, presented proposed wording drawn from a June packet that would amend Section 9.6.0.302.c (Allowed signage) of the North Augusta Development Code to delete the use of letters or graphics constructed of neon tubing in the downtown mixed-use districts. Paradise noted that the planning commission, not staff, requested the text amendment be prepared and that the commission could approve, disapprove or modify the language.
There were no public comments at the hearing. A commissioner moved to recommend City Council adopt the amendment as read; the motion was seconded. The commission carried the motion on a voice vote with all those present saying “aye.”
If City Council adopts the amendment, signs constructed of neon tubing would no longer be permitted in the two downtown mixed-use districts under the cited code section; implementation would require City Council ordinance language and follow-up code enforcement as applicable.
