District staff updated the board on elementary class-size projections, student routing, and reconfiguration planning at the July meeting.
The report (dated July 1) shows staffing and projected class sizes across elementary schools, including non-Rios and Rios sections and grade-level averages. Superintendent Egan Brzezinski said the district is currently staffed for four non-Rios kindergarten sections and one Rios kindergarten section, and that overall class sizes are largely within board-approved target ranges. He noted Jefferson and WK schools have become more balanced in total enrollment after routing adjustments.
Board members asked about the Rios kindergarten wait list and whether families are being routed; Brzezinski said the wait list has typically ranged from three to five students and the district fills openings as they occur. He explained the district uses policy 798 to route students when a school is full; in routed cases the district has provided bus transportation and worked with families individually on whether students stay at the routed school or return to their attendance-area school if space becomes available.
As part of reconfiguration planning, staff announced a kindergarten readiness camp to be held the week of Aug. 18; staff said family interest has been strong and enrollment remains open.
