The City Council voted unanimously to authorize the Sonoma Valley Fire District to proceed with permitting and installation of a permanent 9/11 memorial at Fire Station 1 (630 Second Street West).
The memorial will include a salvaged steel beam from the World Trade Center as its centerpiece, a commemorative plaque, a brass bell and two subtle LED uplights intended to echo New York's Tribute in Light. The installation will be accessible year-round.
Staff and the Cultural and Fine Arts Commission reviewed the proposal and imposed conditions: the Fire District must obtain building and encroachment permits, provide construction and anchoring details, equip lighting with timers or photocells to limit continuous illumination consistent with city policies, and assume ongoing maintenance. City's insurance provider reviewed the plan and raised no concerns, staff said.
Deputy Chief Bob Norbaum and design lead Neil Caldwell were present for questions. Councilmembers praised the memorialand its linkage to an existing station memorial wall; staff will process required permits. The council vote authorized the district to move forward with permitting and installation and left any public-art funding requests for later council consideration.
