Providence awards tree-inventory contract to Arbor Pro to map city-owned trees

Providence City Council on July 16 unanimously approved awarding the city's tree-inventory request for proposals to Arbor Pro.
Ryan (Scarlett), the city planning director, explained the inventory would catalog the city-owned urban forest in park strips, parks and right-of-way, describe condition, and support a longer-term tree-management plan. The inventory also will help the city apply for future grants and pursue a Tree City USA designation if the council chooses.
Councilmembers Brent Speth and David (council member) said they and staff had reviewed five proposals and that Arbor Pro offered the most complete product for the budget and the city's needs. "They were definitely the leader in giving us the best bang for our buck and the greatest assessment of the number of trees," Brent Speth said.
A motion to accept Arbor Pro's bid passed unanimously. Staff said the work will focus on city-owned trees (parks, park strips, right-of-way) and will not direct removal actions; any removal or pruning decisions will be later policy choices following the inventory.
Ending: The city will proceed with the Arbor Pro contract and expects to use the inventory results to guide maintenance priorities and pursue additional forestry grants and Tree City recognition.
