Commissioner Flores says he does not support firing county manager, urges residents to raise concerns directly

Bowling Green, Fla. — At the Hardee County Board of County Commissioners meeting on July 17, Commissioner Flores used a newly added early “commissioner comments” slot to address public concern over the county manager’s performance and to say he does not support terminating the manager.
Flores said he had received “numerous calls, emails, [and] messages from concerned citizens of Hardee County” in the previous two weeks and wanted to give the public a chance to raise their concerns. “I do not support terminating your employment,” Flores said, addressing the county manager directly. He added that while improvements are possible, he believes it is necessary for the commission to air concerns publicly and to work through issues collaboratively.
Flores listed items he said the commission has accomplished since his election, including “enhanced staff training opportunities, new maintenance and equipment replacement plan, policy and procedure updates, and revisions to the land development code to foster growth.” He thanked voters for their support and urged residents to contact him with county concerns.
The board had amended the agenda at the start of the meeting to add item 3B, commissioner comments, after Flores requested the change. No formal personnel action was taken during the meeting.
Commissioner Wells and other commissioners briefly expressed appreciation for the remarks and for the work of county staff; no commissioner proposed or moved any action to alter the county manager’s employment status during the session.
The comment occurred at the start of the meeting after the agenda was amended; no vote or directive followed Flores’s remarks.
