Resident urges council to study citywide mosquito abatement program

During the public-input portion of the meeting, resident Randall Diamond urged the city to research a citywide mosquito abatement program to address breeding in Utah Lake shores, the Jordan River and retention ponds.
Diamond said one untreated pond can produce more than a million mosquitoes and described experience on a county mosquito abatement board. He cited a prior community abatement cost of $4.74 per parcel (his stated figure) and recommended an integrated pest-management approach: public education to eliminate standing water, larval control using safe pond treatments and mosquito fish, and adult fogging as a last resort.
Diamond noted that West Nile virus had been detected this year in Utah County and said Zika is present in Utah and spreading northward. He asked the council to “direct staff to research successful mosquito control strategy and to consider implementing an integrated pest management plan for Saratoga Springs.” The council thanked him; no formal direction or action was taken at the meeting.
