A staff member explained the updates came from state changes and that Neola, the policy vendor, had vetted the updates with state and federal attorneys. The primary substantive question was whether the district should require the board to approve course instruction before it is used in classrooms. One option in the draft would have required board approval prior to instruction when the curriculum is “required by law”; an alternative would allow instruction to begin with retrospective board review.
Board members discussed the operational impact. One board member said keeping the current approach — where instruction can begin and be reviewed afterward — avoids excessive micromanagement. Another asked whether prior approval had been the district practice; staff responded it had not. A board member asked staff to remove the language requiring prior approval and bring a cleaned-up draft to the next meeting.
