La Puente mayor briefs San Gabriel council on San Gabriel Basin Water Quality Authority work

Valerie Munoz, mayor of La Puente and the San Gabriel Basin Water Quality Authority (WQA) representative for non‑pumping cities, addressed the San Gabriel City Council during public comment on July 15 to describe the WQA's work on groundwater cleanup.
Munoz said the WQA was created by the state legislature in 1992 to develop, finance and implement programs to clean up contaminated groundwater that provides drinking water for residents across the San Gabriel Valley. She said about 80% of the region's water supply comes from groundwater pumped by local wells and that the authority coordinates with federal and state agencies including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Regional Water Quality Control Board.
In her remarks Munoz said the authority has secured funding and other resources for cleanup efforts; she stated, "we have secured over $126,000,000 in funding, $60,000,000 from state and over $700,000,000 from responsible parties for the cleanup efforts." She also told the council that the WQA seeks to avoid relying on local ratepayers for cleanup costs and that the WQA is available to brief cities and arrange tours of treatment facilities. Munoz said she left contact information with the city clerk for councilmembers or staff who wish to schedule a tour.
No council action followed the comment; Munoz's remarks were presented as informational to the council and public.
