San Gabriel council approves MOU with Arts Bridging the Gap for San Gabriel Valley Symphony residency at Mission Playhouse

The San Gabriel City Council on July 15 approved a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Arts Bridging the Gap (ABG) on behalf of the San Gabriel Valley Symphony (SGVS) to allow the orchestra to use the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse under a phased partnership.

Community Services Director Perez explained staff recommends a first‑season arrangement in which SGVS would pay standard playhouse rental costs including deposit, staffing, security and event‑specific expenses, with some administrative and equipment fees waived for the initial season. The staff report says the rental deposit of $2,000 would be paid prior to the event and other fees could be paid after performances when revenue is received. Staff noted there is "no direct fiscal impact for the proposed use" but that the city could experience a loss of revenue if ticket sales do not cover playhouse costs.

ABG Executive Director Kyle Denman told the council ABG is an 11‑year‑old Los Angeles County arts nonprofit that works with youth, visual and performing arts programs and has expanded into musical arts. Denman said ABG has a broad funding portfolio of public and private grants and emphasized ABG's focus on paying artists and supporting sustainability.

Artistic director Alex Dang said his goal with SGVS is to tailor programming to the local community, include AAPI and immigrant voices, and give area students and residents exposure to professional-level performances. Dang said he grew up in the area and wants younger residents to "see what it looks like" to have a music career and to see themselves on stage.

Staff listed the first two proposed concerts as an October Mid Autumn Festival concert (October 4 is held on the Playhouse calendar) and a Lunar New Year concert in January 2026; the group's inaugural concert is scheduled in August at Barnes Park in Monterey Park. Rehearsal space for SGVS will be at Alhambra High School, the staff report said.

The MOU is structured as a phased partnership: the first season would consist of four concerts with standard rental charges and waivers limited to administrative and equipment usage fees; if the initial season proves successful the city could renegotiate for a residency with fee reductions or revenue sharing in future seasons. The council approved the staff recommendation and authorized the city manager to execute the MOU and related documents pending city attorney review; the motion passed 5-0.

Denman said ABG will bring marketing capacity and community connections, and Dang emphasized programming that includes composers and performers from the region. Staff and council members noted potential local economic benefits from audience members visiting restaurants and businesses near the Mission Playhouse.
