The Patrick County School Board on June 17 heard a facilities committee report that representatives of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will undertake roadwork near Hartman Reynolds Memorial School at no cost to the county or the school division, but that the Board of Supervisors must initiate the legal abandonment process.
Committee members Walter Scott and the division maintenance director reported on a May 16 meeting with VDOT about longstanding traffic and safety concerns on the road that serves the Hartman Reynolds facility. Committee members said the location is frequently used during athletic events and that pedestrian exposure to traffic presents safety risks.
According to the report, VDOT has prepared drawings and indicated it will perform the necessary work without charging the county or school division; however, the supervisors must formally initiate abandonment of the right‑of‑way and hold a public hearing. The facilities committee asked the school board to recommend that the Board of Supervisors place the matter on their agenda; a board member moved and the board approved that recommendation by voice vote.
Several board members said they were grateful for VDOT’s partnership and noted they hoped the work could be completed before the next school year, though no firm timeline was set in the meeting.
