Board signs 2022 child nutrition agreement after debate over nondiscrimination language

The Lansing School Board voted to adopt the 2022 Kansas Child Nutrition & Wellness agreement after a lengthy discussion about nondiscrimination wording tied to federal guidance and an attorney general's letter.

Board member Amy proposed submitting a line‑out version of the newer template to remove references to “gender identity” and “sexual orientation,” saying she had worked with the Kansas attorney general's office and the AG's deputies on how to proceed. Amy moved that the district approve the line‑out approach; the motion drew extended debate about whether removing or altering categories could jeopardize federal funding.

Supporters of adopting the 2022 template argued the district must avoid administrative burden and the risk of losing federal funds while state and federal guidance were in flux. One board member said, “I still just don't think it's worth the risk of losing that federal funding.” Opponents urged legal review before altering the language.

Ultimately the board approved the 2022 agreement as the recommended form to submit to Kansas Department of Education (KSDE). The superintendent's office said KSDE would provide updated forms if and when the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) issues written direction; until then the 2022 contract is the district's working template. The board directed staff to proceed with the 2022 submission so district child‑nutrition operations remain eligible for state and federal reimbursements.

Board discussion also noted the administrative work required if the district adopted the 2025 nondiscrimination statement now: the district would need to change numerous materials (online forms, handbooks, vendor templates) and then potentially change them again if USDA issues alternate guidance. The superintendent said KSDE had said once USDA provided written directives CNW (Child Nutrition & Wellness) would update forms and supply the district with a timeline for adoption.
