McFarland advances primary school renaming plan; committee to propose display honoring Conrad Albion

Board members received an update that the process to rename McFarland Primary School and create a display honoring Conrad Albion is underway and has not required district funds so far.
District Administrator Aaron said the work to shift internal branding and logistical items — such as vendor listings and the district’s public-facing references to the building — has begun with no cost to the district. The board is forming a small group to draft a proposal for a permanent display that will both recognize Albion’s accomplishments and acknowledge his role in historical restrictive covenants.
“A group is being formed to help spearhead the work for creating some sort of a display, identifying what would be created, where it would be, that recognizes Conrad Albion’s accomplishments, acknowledges his role in with restricted, covenants as well,” Aaron said during the district administrator’s report.
Board members identified Bruce and Megan Fessler as participants in leading the effort and said more information, including a proposed design and fundraising opportunities, will be shared “in the next few weeks.” The district emphasized the work so far has focused on internal, low-cost steps such as changing references to “McFarland Primary School” on internal documents and systems.
A donation to pool operations The board also thanked the Spartan Sharks for a donation to the Angi O’Donnell Aquatic Center to purchase a new refrigerator. District staff said the gift will help offset equipment costs for pool operations.
What the board did not decide No formal vote was taken on the renaming or the display at the meeting. The update was informational and the board directed staff and the volunteer group to return with a proposal and fundraising plan.
Related community highlights During the same report the district shared non-budget items including summer-school activities, a high rate of library book returns at McFarland Primary School, and student participation in community service and academic programs. Those items were presented as routine updates and were not the subject of action at the meeting.
Next steps Officials said they plan to present a formal proposal outlining display design, placement, and fundraising options in forthcoming meetings. Donations and fundraising will be identified before any district-funded commitments are made.
