City reports: grants received, Tyler payroll migration planned, library leak and nuisance abatements

City staff provided a series of administrative updates during the council meeting, including grant reimbursements, an IT migration plan, nuisance abatements and building maintenance issues.
The city received a $23,000 reimbursement from the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) related to a local grant (recorded in the meeting as an IEDA "cat grant" reimbursement). Staff said the Akron child-care grant final report reimbursement of $10,000 has been accepted and expected to arrive later in the month.
Lead service line replacement letters were mailed to property owners and at least one replacement was completed after a water-main break. The city also reported an upcoming data migration from GWorks to Tyler for financials and payroll; staff said the goal is to be live on Tyler payroll for the first payroll in 2026 and that the November–December period will be heavy with training and implementation work.
Staff notified the council that nuisance-abatement notices were mailed last week and would be rechecked, and that the police department building needs a new furnace (the existing unit is roughly 30 years old). During storm-related inspections the new library sustained a small roof leak where control wiring had not been sealed; the area has been tarped and books removed from the affected shelves while staff complete repairs.
Upcoming events and operational notes included Crime Night Out on Aug. 5 from 6–8 p.m. at Riverview Park (council members will hand out hot dogs), and a proposed pre-meeting tour of the old library at 5 p.m. before the next council meeting. Staff also said they are obtaining quotes for a new furnace for the police department and that audit-season requests have already begun arriving.
On the Old Dallam Brewery property, staff said the owner has been contacted and needs to remove a pile of dirt and vehicles; the property was one of the subjects of a nuisance letter and staff reported some cleanup activity and promises to continue follow-up.
