Residents, advocates press Albany County Legislature to create civilian oversight board for county jail

Multiple residents, advocacy groups and formerly incarcerated people urged the Albany County Legislature on July 14 to establish a civilian oversight review board for the Albany County Correctional Facility, saying the jail has a pattern of alleged abuse, unsanitary conditions and inadequate accountability.

At the public comment period, speakers representing or allied with Freedom Unshackled, the 100 Black Men and other community groups described complaints they said they submitted to the legislature months earlier and said they have not received substantive responses. "We sent a proposal for the review board in April," one speaker said, noting repeated attempts to get the legislature to act. Several speakers said they had been told to wait for staff work but that weeks had passed without follow-up.
