Pryor Creek city officials said planning is underway for the Bluegrass and Barbecue festival, which this year has been moved to October to avoid a conflict with the Maze County Fair. Organizers said the move also allows the event to reuse fairgrounds infrastructure, including bleachers and the venue’s trash dumpster system.
Mayor told the council the event is being run by a coalition of local partners, including the city’s EDTA, Main Street and the Chamber of Commerce, and emphasized the event depends on volunteers. "We have a lot of moving parts in this Bluegrass Festival. This is the first year that we are doing it solo...the volunteer help is really, really [critical]," the Mayor said. He also said the city saw a "historic spike in sales tax last year," a stated goal of the festival organizers.
Organizers said they expect more vendors and changes to the layout to improve customer flow, and they invited residents and civic groups to volunteer. Staff noted that prior coordination with the fair board and with a contact named Kelly Brown will allow use of bleachers and the dumpster system during the festival. No formal vote was taken on the festival during this meeting; staff asked interested volunteers to contact the Mayor or event coordinators.
