Sean Ewing, a City of Mebane councilman and resident, asked Alamance County commissioners during public comment to place a one‑quarter percent county sales and use tax on the 2026 ballot so voters can decide whether to dedicate the revenue locally.
Ewing said a quarter percent — 25 cents on a $100 purchase — would generate an estimated $7–8 million annually and argued that growth and major retail draws (he cited Tanger, Alamance Crossing, and an anticipated Buc‑ee’s) make now an appropriate time to let voters decide. “This additional quarter of a percent sales tax is about bringing our own tax dollars back to work for us here in Alamance County,” Ewing said.
Ewing acknowledged a similar proposal failed in 2018 and said public distrust of new taxes contributed to that result; he asked the commissioners to give voters “a choice and a voice for a shared future.” The board did not take action during the meeting on the request; commissioners did not indicate a timeline or express a formal decision on placing the matter on the ballot during the session.
