Intern maps town roads, updates sign inventory and compiles roads manual

Thomas Hayden, a municipal intern, reported to the Bluff Town Council on a package of work he completed for the public works/roads program.
Hayden said he imported town boundary shapes, roads and culvert layers into the Diamond Maps GIS platform used under contract by Bluff. He added a current road-sign inventory, created a spreadsheet of signs, and recommended the town use Diamond Maps’ sharing tools to communicate maintenance needs with county partners.
Hayden described a roads department manual he compiled to capture maintenance practices, annual maintenance schedules (grading, pothole repair, limited snow plowing), contacts, current projects and possible near-term priorities such as culvert maintenance. He said Michael (the current roads manager) reviewed much of the work and that the manual is intended as a living document to be updated by future staff.
Councilmembers praised the work and asked about integrating other datasets, such as an addressing file that is managed at the state level. Hayden and staff said address data should remain integrated with the state’s addressing system but can be surfaced in Diamond Maps for town use. The council discussed how to house the files on OneDrive so staff can access and maintain them going forward.
Hayden said the work will remain available in a shared town folder and that he will finish final touches before the end of his internship.
