Palm Desert proclaims July 2025 Outdoor Worker Appreciation Week

Mayor Jan C. Harnick read a proclamation declaring July 2025 as Outdoor Worker Appreciation Week in Palm Desert and urged residents to thank outdoor workers who provide essential services.
In the proclamation Harnick noted extreme summer heat in desert regions and cited a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics figure — “in the last decade, the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 479 worker deaths due to environmental heat exposure” — and said employers are required to provide adequate rest, water and shade. The proclamation named fields that rely on outdoor workers, including emergency services, landscaping, public utilities, agriculture, tourism and construction.
Randy Chavez, director of public works, accepted the proclamation alongside other department directors and thanked council for recognizing crews who work in extreme heat. Chavez asked council to acknowledge inspection teams, project managers and street personnel who monitor construction and maintenance in the city. Others representing code enforcement and building inspection also thanked council for the recognition.
There was no formal vote required for the proclamation. Council members and staff used the presentation to highlight public-safety risks and the contribution of first responders and utility crews who work during heat events.
