The Accomack County Board of Supervisors approved two related actions on June 17 enabling the county to assume full responsibility for ambulance services at the southern end of the county beginning July 1.
County Administrator Mike Mason told the board the county will purchase two ambulances from Watcher Prigg volunteer fire company (transcript spelling varies) and approved a lease with the Painter Volunteer Fire Company to house the vehicles. Mason said the county has been providing full-time equivalent staff for ambulance service in the area but did not previously own the vehicles; the purchase and lease create the county-owned assets and housing need for operating the service starting July 1.
Mason said the purchase agreement and the lease were negotiated with local stakeholders and that county insurance coverage for the expanded service will begin on the planned July 1 implementation date. Director Pruitt and county staff had met with both fire companies and worked through outstanding issues before presenting final documents to the board.
Why it matters: the actions transfer long-term equipment and housing responsibility to the county as volunteer-run ambulance operations cease in the southern service area, ensuring continuity of emergency medical transport.
Action: The board approved the ambulance purchase agreement and the Painter Volunteer Fire Company lease by voice vote.
