The committee on July 9 voted to forward a retroactive resolution authorizing the San Francisco Police Department to accept and expend an in‑kind gift of 600 naloxone units valued at $14,400, distributed through the California Naloxone Distribution Project administered by the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS).
Kimmy Woo, Chief Financial Officer for SFPD, said the kits were received August 7, 2024 and that the department has participated in the program since 2019. The distribution aims to reduce opioid‑related overdose deaths by providing naloxone to organizations and agencies for frontline distribution. The resolution asks the Board to ratify acceptance of the in‑kind donation and to authorize related actions under the city charter.
One public commenter urged broader housing solutions and questioned why police receive naloxone rather than other agencies; SFPD staff and committee members noted SFPD’s role in emergency response and distribution. The committee forwarded the item to the full Board with a positive recommendation (Dorsey, Engardio, Chan — 3 ayes).
