Members of the Austin Tourism Commission’s short‑term rental working group updated the commission on July 9 following recent meetings with the City’s Short‑Term Rental Compliance team.
Commissioner Chappell reported the department is drafting two requests for proposals: one to identify unlicensed listings (using platform data and AI search tools) and another to streamline the licensing and operational workflow inside city departments. She said platforms have an additional month to remit occupancy (hotel) taxes and that city staff expect platform-collected tax remittances to arrive.
Chappell and Commissioner Chanin said the compliance team intends to publish and implement the short‑term rental licensing policy this year, with a license adoption timeline set for October. They noted platform accountability remains a concern: Houston recently adopted an ordinance that requires marketplace listings to display a local license number, and commissioners said Austin has discussed similar approaches as an enforcement tool.
Greg (identified in the meeting as a participant in the working group) confirmed Airbnb and VRBO are collecting occupancy taxes on their platforms and that the city hopes increased reporting and the licensing requirement will drive compliance once the policy is live.
Commissioners asked for updated financial figures and for the compliance team to return with counts and compliance metrics once platforms remit data. The working group will continue monitoring license issuance, platform cooperation and enforcement tools and report back to the commission.
