Community Services staff presented two playground projects and asked the council to authorize contracts and modest budget appropriations.
For Lions Park (item 12.2) staff requested authority for the director of community services to negotiate and execute a contract with Miracle Play Systems for targeted repairs to the long spiral slide and associated realignment work, and to appropriate $5,000 from the general fund unassigned fund balance. A public commenter gave staff a “thumbs up” for keeping costs down by performing targeted repairs rather than full replacement. The council voted to approve the staff recommendation by roll call.
For Benham Park/City Park (item 12.3) staff explained that the manufacturer and installer involved require a sole-source procurement under the city’s procurement rules (UPPCA/sole-source exception) to install a Burke factory enclosure and remove an inoperable spiral slide; the recommended contract amount cited in staff materials was $16,618.39 and staff asked for a $20,000 appropriation from the unassigned fund balance. Councilmembers voted to approve the sole-source contract and appropriation; staff said the work aims to comply with safety standards and preserve community playground assets.
Both items passed on roll-call votes: Lions Park repair (Councilmember Carter—Aye; Councilmember Noe—Aye; Councilmember Yarbrough—Aye; Vice Mayor Gottberg—Aye; Mayor John Clerici—Aye) and Benham Park replacement (same roll-call outcome).
