Harney County awarded $90,000 grant for grasshopper and Mormon cricket treatment

Harney County officials told the court on July 2 that the county received a signed contract through the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) for grasshopper and Mormon cricket treatment this year.
The county will receive $90,000 and the Harney County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) will administer the program, county staff said. Officials reported the infestation level this year is milder than in some recent years, with limited patches noted in the Jersey area and more southern parts of the county. Treatments are time-sensitive; staff said spraying typically concludes by July 4 in the county and that the program uses a cost-share model. If funds are not fully used this season, ODA can apply remaining funds to fall population surveys, roll them to the next year, or share with neighboring counties that have higher need.
Ending County staff said outreach to prior participants is underway and that the county will monitor treatment needs this season; emergency or agriculture staff will manage scheduling and reporting under the SWCD contract.
