Margate CRA updates: wayfinding signs, Atlantic lighting, entryway signs and $4.7M estimate for sports turf fields

CRA staff on July 8 gave updates on several ongoing public-space and infrastructure projects, including wayfinding signs, medians, lighting and a design-build package for turf fields.
Staff said the wayfinding-signage project is moving forward and that survey work and electrical coordination must be completed before fabrication and installation. Margate Boulevard improvements are under contract; staff delayed construction until after the city's parade to avoid conflicts with the event and expects visible activity within a month.
On Atlantic Boulevard lighting, staff said conduit has been run between medians but that estimates to supply and install the lights were “very expensive,” and staff will report back with the numbers. A board member suggested exploring lower-voltage landscape lighting or solar and local electricians as lower-cost alternatives; staff said the conduit is in place but wiring still needs to be run.
Staff said entryway signs for both ends of Atlantic Boulevard and both ends of State Road 441 are in final surveying and that vendors are secured. The staff stated the signs are individually priced and said, “we're looking at about a 170,000, plus the cost to run dedicated electric lines to those signs.”
The Banks Road Sports Fields project remains in play; staff are finishing a design-build RFQ package and expect to advertise within a few months. The last estimate for that project was about $4,700,000 and the project will be rebudgeted. Southgate median improvements were reported as substantially complete; staff are monitoring newly planted trees and replacing struggling specimens. Coral Gate Park improvements are in a final phase that includes playground replacement and building rehabilitation.
Why it matters: signage, lighting and parks upgrades affect downtown appearance and pedestrian experience; the turf-field project represents a significant capital expense that the CRA will rebudget. Per-sign entryway costs and the estimated sports-complex budget will be material to FY26 planning.
Ending: Staff said they will return cost estimates and more detailed schedules for lighting and sign electrical work at a future meeting.
