Resident seeks city involvement as judge for high-school Constitution Contest

During the public-comment portion of the meeting, Newton resident Mike Fellows described a Constitution Contest he organizes for high school seniors across local school districts and asked the commission to provide a volunteer judge/delegate for the judging event on October 16 and assistance with funding.
Fellows said the contest asks seniors to submit two-page essays on a constitution-related question; a panel of judges evaluates submissions and awards $750, $500 and $250 prizes for first through third place. He said the event is free for students and that judges and funding are the primary needs. Fellows said he has secured some donations and educational pocket constitutions but still required about $2,100 in total funding; he said he had raised about one-third of that goal.
Commissioners thanked Fellows and one commissioner said they had judged previously and would be available for the date; commissioners indicated they would designate at least one commissioner to participate as a judge.
