The Cannon County Board of Education on July 10 reviewed policy options on student use of wireless communication devices and considered several other policy updates, including compensation guides and employee discrimination policies.
Staff said the wireless‑device policy under discussion is Option 2, which would prohibit student possession of wireless devices for the entirety of the school day. The board asked for clarification before staff begins drafting procedures to implement the policy. No formal action was taken at the workshop; staff said no vote is required immediately and asked that clarification be provided before procedures are developed.
Among other policy changes presented were updates to Policy 1.102 (board members), Policy 1.17 (school district goals), Policy 5.11 (compensation guides and contracts), Policy 5.5 (employee discrimination/harassment), Policy 6.304 (student discrimination/harassment/bullying), Policy 6.411 (student wellness), and Policy 6.6 (student records). Staff highlighted Policy 5.11 — compensation guides and contracts — because it currently leaves districts discretion over whether to compensate the estate of a deceased teacher for unused leave; staff noted the district does not have budget authority for such payments unless the board elects to add them to the budget.
Board members asked staff to return with options and budget implications before any formal policy adoption.
