New Shoreham committee to host Aug. 4 public meeting and resilience expo on Corn Neck Road options

The New Shoreham Coastal Resilience Committee confirmed plans for an Aug. 4 public meeting at 4 p.m. at which GZA will present three nature-based solution options for Corn Neck Road. The meeting will be followed by a resilience expo for public questions and table-based discussion.

The committee described the event as a two-part program: GZA’s presentation of design options at 4 p.m., a short refreshment break, and an open ‘resilience expo’ at about 5 p.m. where attendees can visit five staffed tables covering (1) Corn Neck resilience (dune erosion and the beach house), (2) mapping and storm tools, (3) marsh protection and migration, (4) homeowner concerns (saltwater intrusion and failing septic systems), and (5) resilience solutions and partnerships.

Committee members said outreach materials and a newly launched project website—with a QR code—will invite wider participation. Outreach lead Saoirse (committee member) presented sample invitations, table tents, sticky-note engagement boards and a resilience “bingo” exercise to encourage informal participation, and the committee agreed to post the site link in event promotions.

Volunteers will staff the tables; the committee requested that members bring one plate of finger foods to offset catering costs. GZA will also preview the three options with outreach staff in a working session prior to the public meeting so the public presentation can be adjusted based on committee feedback.

Why it matters: the meeting is the committee’s next public step to gather community feedback on options that, if funded, could lead to design and eventual construction work on or near Corn Neck Road.

Next steps: GZA will display options at the Aug. 4 meeting; outreach staff will post event materials and the project website QR code; the committee will collect public input at the expo tables and use it to advise the town planner and GZA.
