Adams County Aging Network introduces senior resource fairs and monthly meetings to commissioners

Representatives of the Adams County Aging Network (ACAN) introduced the group at the July 8 Adams County Board of Commissioners meeting and invited commissioners to attend monthly meetings and upcoming senior resource fairs.

Greg Kaylor, identifying himself as an Adams County representative to ACAN and to the Denver Regional Council of Governments’ aging committee, told commissioners the group meets the first Wednesday of each month at 9 a.m. at Thornton Community Center’s Community Connections building. “ACAN brings together nonprofit organizations, businesses, and government agencies to develop creative solutions that improve the lives of older adults,” Kaylor said.

Kaylor said ACAN organizes up to two senior resource fairs per year; the most recent fair at the county human resources building hosted more than 50 exhibitors and about 120 community members. He and Bonnie Ashton, who Kaylor said serve as District 3 residents, urged county leaders to remember seniors’ needs as policy and budget decisions are made.

Commissioner Kathy Henson said she has attended ACAN meetings and praised the group’s resource fairs. Commissioners thanked the presenters and accepted printed brochures and contact cards offered to county staff.

Why it matters: Commissioners noted demographic trends cited by ACAN indicating growth in the county’s older-adult population, and they encouraged county departments to maintain contact with ACAN as programs for older adults are planned or revised.
