Caldwell — The City Council approved a resolution authorizing a School Resource Officer (SRO) agreement between the City of Caldwell and Caldwell School District 132, moving the interlocal to implementation after council and staff described training and coordination plans.
Council members revisited questions raised when the item was previously discussed in February: whether armed security contractors would remain in schools and how responsibilities and command would be coordinated with Caldwell Police Department. Deputy Chief Sopaaga told the council the department and the district met and that the city's SROs will be assigned to the schools where the city provides SRO services. He added the department’s command staff and detectives are assembling a training and partnership plan to ensure effective response and communications between SROs and any school security personnel; the plan is due before the start of the school year.
Caldwell School District Superintendent (Doctor) French said the district has used armed security in the past when funded by federal sources and that, if security contractors return, the district would require them to train with Caldwell Police Department and follow police direction during an emergency. Councilor Register sought confirmation the contract had legal review; the city attorney confirmed office signoff.
The council approved the resolution by unanimous voice vote.
