Several residents used the public-forum portion of the July 7 meeting to press the City Council for public discussion of a proposed change to Cedar Falls’ form of government.
Gabe Garde House of Homeway Drive told the council he and others have collected signatures and asked that the council “take this seriously” and hold public discussion, saying: “I just want this to be taken seriously. The silence on this is very, very hard for me to understand.” He asked the council to consider options including calling a special meeting, discussing the matter during council updates, or referring a ballot measure.
Other residents, including Kim Jordan, also urged public conversation; Rosemary Beach and Jim Brown praised Sturgis Falls volunteers earlier in the public-comment period.
Council response and next steps Mayor and councilors discussed timing for a formal informational session. The mayor said he would prepare and bring an informational presentation explaining the city’s current form of government and the options allowed under Iowa law, with the goal of scheduling that briefing in August so the council and public can be informed before fall election/referral timelines. Council members said an early informational session would help ensure voters and candidates understand options and deadlines.
No formal council action was taken; the mayor committed to present options to the council and public in the near term.
