Valley County Commissioners unanimously approved a health and wildfire mosquito surveillance agreement on July 7 after the county’s weed and pest supervisor said the county qualified for a $3,000 grant.
Steve Anderson, the county weed and pest control supervisor, told commissioners the grant was difficult to secure because Health and Welfare had changed criteria; the award expires at the end of the month and Anderson said he expects to spend the funds within the available three‑week window. Anderson reported surveillance has found increasing numbers of Culex mosquitoes — the species that can carry West Nile virus — but the county has not yet tested any positive samples.
A commissioner moved to approve the agreement; the motion was seconded and approved on a voice vote.
Anderson said he will notify commissioners if surveillance detects West Nile virus. Commissioners briefly discussed seasonal work and thanked Anderson for the mosquito surveillance effort.
