The discussion included scope and cost details: speakers said the project currently under consideration would build a curb-and-sidewalk section from Farmington to the MAC entrance, using concrete and curb to meet federal and ADA requirements. Commissioners and staff discussed the overall project estimate, which earlier in planning had been described as roughly $3 million for the county portion of work under consideration; staff said project scope and cost had been reduced from earlier, higher estimates.
Bridget explained how match money affects competitiveness: “We can ask for the whole amount. It's not a matching grant, but we get more points if we match,” she said, referring to the scoring system used by the grant program. Commissioners discussed that matching some portion of the grant (staff mentioned a $200,000 match as an example) would increase the county's points but would require identifying local funds.
Commissioners asked about schedule and coordination with neighboring jurisdictions. Staff said Mine La Motte/Ledington has pursued its own TAP grant and that county staff are preparing traffic counts, accident data and other documentation the state typically requests. The application will be evaluated by the state in the months after the July 11 deadline.
The commission voted to give permission to apply for the grant and, separately, to adopt a resolution that, if the grant is awarded, pledges the county's portion of the project.
