Board hears capital projects update: innovation wing groundbreaking, HVAC and elementary renovations underway

At the July 1 meeting the White Plains City School District received a capital projects update from district facilities staff, Triton Construction (construction management) and h2m (architects). The update covered the recently celebrated groundbreaking for the high school's new innovation wing, HVAC and filtration projects across multiple schools, elementary-school summer renovations and a handful of projects recently out to bid.
Construction for the high school innovation wing has begun following a groundbreaking ceremony. Presenters said that the larger high school project came in under budget so far, and that work on the innovation wing is starting now. District staff and project managers described this as the culmination of a multi-year master-plan effort that began in 2018.
HVAC and filtration upgrades: presenters said five original HVAC projects (White Plains High School campus buildings, Highlands Middle School, Eastview, Church Street and the GW site) plus two later-awarded projects are progressing. A prior software communication issue with Dakin equipment affecting controls has been “radically resolved,” presenters said. A mechanical issue at Highlands remains under review but will be addressed. Ridgeway and Mamaroneck HVAC work is expected to be finished this summer; Mamaroneck’s completion is contingent on Con Edison delivering a transformer by August. Presenters said they will continue to press Con Edison for timely delivery.
Elementary renovations: summer work at Church Street, GW, Mamaroneck and Ridgeway was described as underway, focusing on serving-line renovations, library renovations, flooring, finishes and quarter walls. Contractors are on-site and the district said the goal is substantial completion by August so spaces are ready for the start of the school year.
Bids and design items: bids opened for Rochambeau renovations and Turtle Alternative High School work (window replacements, classroom alterations and HVAC upgrades); presenters said the presumptive low bidders were under budget pending vetting. SED (State Education Department) approval has been received for a switchgear upgrade at Education House and bathroom renovations at Mamaroneck Elementary. One remaining bond project (phase 2 interior alterations at the high school) is still in design and is being finalized for submission to SED with a target of summer 2026 construction.
Why this matters: the work addresses classroom climate control, building safety and program expansion (innovation wing). Some timelines depend on external parties (for example Con Edison transformer delivery) and SED approvals for construction scheduling.
