District recommends Saxon Foundations K–2 materials to align with science of reading

The presentation named Kim Miller in curriculum and instruction and Wendy Jowers in reading and literacy as staff leading the initiative. Administrators said the updated Saxon products are more tightly aligned to the science of reading and would support teachers implementing the district’s literacy strategy.
A board member asked whether the district requires cursive instruction; administrators said Georgia’s standards recently changed to require cursive but the district had already included handwriting instruction for several years and had been recognized for literacy work at Ambrose and other schools.
Administrators asked to place the textbook purchase on the consent agenda; no final purchase vote occurred during the work session.
