District safety staff on June 26 recommended the Coffee County Board of Education approve the purchase of two Dodge Durango SUVs and a pickup truck for the safety department.
Administrators said the pickup truck would be used to move delicate, expensive weapons-detection equipment around the district — equipment recently used at athletic events — and that the two Durangos would replace aging surplus vehicles the district had used from the sheriff’s department. Presenters said the district had benefited from the surplused sheriff’s vehicles but now needs replacements.
Staff noted the purchases would follow state procurement guidelines and use state-contract pricing for vehicles outfitted for safety use; presenters estimated that purchasing an equivalent specialized pickup outside of contract pricing could cost $85,000–$90,000. Administrators also said the district would not pay sales tax on vehicles bought through the state contract.
Administrators asked the board to place the safety-vehicle purchase on the consent agenda for the next regular meeting so the district could proceed with procurement. No formal vote occurred during the work session.
