Cameron County advisory committee recommends SpaceX dune-permit with required mitigation reporting

The Cameron County Dune Protection Advisory Committee voted to recommend that the Cameron County Commissioners Court approve a beachfront construction certificate and dune-protection permit for SpaceX Exploration Inc.’s proposed air-separation unit (ASU) near Boca Chica Beach, with a requirement that SpaceX provide periodic reports on the progress of dune mitigation and restoration.

The committee’s advisory recommendation follows more than an hour of public comment in which residents, tribal representatives, and conservation groups urged denial or delay, citing public-safety, cultural and ecological concerns. Dr. Sharon Wilcox of Defenders of Wildlife told the committee, “We respectfully oppose the issuance of a beachfront construction certificate and dune protection permit for the proposed air separator unit at Boca Chica.” Several speakers asked for a 30-day public notice and a separate public hearing so the community could review application materials.

Why it matters: The proposed ASU would sit on roughly 1.66 acres of a 4.2-acre tract owned by SpaceX; the development area is inside the county’s 1,000-foot critical-dune buffer but outside the county “building setback line,” county staff said.
