Carson City proclaims July 2025 as Parks and Recreation Month, highlights adaptive 'Movers and Doers' program

Mayor Lori Bagwell on Thursday proclaimed July 2025 as Parks and Recreation Month in Carson City and urged residents to “spend time in their favorite parks and enjoy this beautiful region we call home.”
The proclamation, read at the Board of Supervisors meeting, noted the size of the city’s park system and its role in public health, economic vitality and quality of life. Jennifer Budge, Carson City parks and recreation director, introduced staff and highlighted the department’s “Movers and Doers” adult adaptive recreation program, calling it “probably the most rewarding thing I think we do.”
Budge said the program is led by staff members Andrew and Charmaine and includes participants who attend activities such as a bowling league. She thanked donors and partners who provided recent financial support; at the meeting Budge and Mayor Bagwell acknowledged a $3,200 contribution from Eastern Star and fundraising from a recent disc-golf tournament that aided the program.
Board members praised parks staff for their work during hot weather and the outreach completed during the master plan update. “During the master plan update, all of the listening tours, people spoke about quality of life and talked about our amazing parks and our wonderful open space and our trails,” Supervisor Schuette said.
The proclamation also recognized Carson City’s designations including Tree City USA and Bee City USA in Nevada. No formal vote was required for the mayoral proclamation.
The Board and parks staff encouraged residents to visit parks and participate in summer programming; Budge said the department will continue to promote recreational and therapeutic programs for people of all abilities.
