EMS reports longer response times in outlying townships; medical examiner cites probable overdose death

The EMS director told the Public Safety Committee that falls are the most common EMS call type to date and provided a breakdown of calls and response times by community. The director said the county had completed 332 calls in the City of Hayward with an average response time of about 5 minutes; Town of Hayward had about 263 calls with a roughly 9-minute average; Bass Lake had about 129 calls with an average near 12 minutes. Outlying townships, the report said, have average response times from about 14 to 19 minutes.
The director said staffing has generally held with two ambulances in service, but on busy days or when a part-time crew member does not cover an extra shift, response times have increased because coverage temporarily drops below full staffing.
The EMS director also noted planned professional development: an EMS leadership conference in Phoenix in July with multi-day classes.
On the medical examiner's report, the committee was told toxicology results are still pending for a recent death, but the examiner said they are "pretty confident" that there is one additional overdose death of a 29-year-old; confirmation awaits toxicology.
Committee members did not request immediate policy changes but were informed of the staffing constraints and variable response times in more remote townships.
