The Soledad City Council on July 2 adopted two proclamations recognizing local community contributions. The council proclaimed July as Park and Recreation Month in Soledad and designated July 6 as Mario Martinez Day to honor the life and accomplishments of the Olympic weightlifter Mario Martinez.
Parks and recreation: Recreation Director Jessica Potts accepted the Park and Recreation Month proclamation and outlined ongoing programs the Parks and Recreation Department runs year‑round, including youth sports, senior activities and the Music in the Park concert series. Potts said the department will continue to use park programming to promote health, connection and environmental stewardship. Staff noted the Music in the Park series opens again on July 11.
Mario Martinez Day: Mayor Pro Tem Cabrera read a proclamation recognizing Martinez, a Soledad native and three‑time U.S. Olympian, commemorating his achievements and local roots. Family members attended to accept the proclamation and to receive additional recognitions that had been provided by Monterey County Supervisor Chris Lopez, State Senator John Laird (Senate District 17), and the California State Assembly speaker’s office. Martinez’s mother spoke about his early life on a ranch and his rise in international weightlifting; family members and local residents described Martinez as a source of pride and a role model for young people.
Speakers repeatedly emphasized Martinez’s perseverance and community ties. Mayor Velasquez, Mayor Pro Tem Cabrera and several councilmembers praised Martinez’s legacy and encouraged preserving his story in local historic and cultural displays. A local boxing trainer said he will share Martinez’s story with his students to inspire youth in the region.
Ending: The council paused afterward to take photos with family members and representatives. The Parks and Recreation Department and the family indicated they will work with the city to plan future events and displays honoring Martinez’s legacy.
