Superintendent’s report: state funding, legislation and online education
Superintendent Nikki reported on state and federal developments that could affect the district. She said the Legislature passed what she described as a “record‑setting amount, which is 11.36 that goes to the state school fund,” and that the district used remaining available dollars and part of its beginning fund balance to fund a compensation package for three employee groups. She said the district dipped into fund balance by about $600,000 to complete that package but expects the biennial funding timetable to balance out the following year.
Nikki also discussed an accountability bill that will center metrics on third‑grade reading and eighth‑grade math, along with other measures such as ninth‑grade on‑track and 4‑ and 5‑year graduation rates. She said the bill includes options for interim assessments and that staff plan to brief new trustees on testing data at a future meeting.
The superintendent said the district is also examining online education as a potential funding stream and program option, noting increased parental demand since COVID and potential benefits such as flexibility, personalized learning and safety considerations; staff will share research and a possible direction for board discussion.
Other items
The superintendent reminded the board that state guidance requires convening an equity advisory committee to the superintendent by September; she invited departing trustees to participate if they wish. Board training and orientation for incoming trustees were also discussed and will be scheduled ahead of the new members’ swearing‑in.
No formal vote was required on these informational items.
