The El Mirage Common Council on July 1 voted to recommend approval to the Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control for a new restaurant liquor license for Del Sol (applicant identified at the meeting as the restaurant owner), located at 12313 Northwest Grand Avenue.
At the previous council meeting police staff had reported a lack of information and issued a "no recommendation" pending further due diligence. Assistant Chief Tim Mason reported on July 1 that the applicant subsequently met with detectives and provided the requested documentation; the department then updated its position to "no recommendation" rather than a negative recommendation. The applicant told council he had met department staff and resolved prior questions.
During the continuation of the public hearing a small number of residents spoke in support; no opposition testimony was recorded. The council voted to recommend approval and directed staff to forward the recommendation to the Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control.
Why it matters: A local restaurant gaining a liquor license affects business operations and neighborhood activity; the police department's due-diligence review is part of the municipal process that feeds the state licensing decision.
Votes and next steps: Council recommended approval; the state Department of Liquor Licenses and Control will make the final licensing decision.
