Madison council proclaims July 2025 Disability Pride Month, raises flag at municipal building

Madison’s Common Council unanimously adopted a resolution recognizing July 2025 as Disability Pride Month and accepted guests who will arrange for the disability pride flag to fly over the municipal building.
Alder Glenn read the resolution, which notes that Disability Pride Month commemorates July 1990 — the month in which the Americans with Disabilities Act was enacted — and describes the disability pride flag’s colors and their significance. Two community members, Nikki VanderMeelen and Denise Jess (representing the Wisconsin Council of the Blind and Visually Impaired and a member of the city's Transportation Commission), accepted the resolution and spoke briefly. Jess said it was “a huge honor” for the flag to fly over Madison’s municipal building and called the action part of “creating a legacy of equity in the city of Madison.”
The Council recorded a unanimous vote in favor of the resolution and flagged that the flag will be flown at City Hall for the month.
