The Plan Commission directed staff to schedule public hearings on amendments to the 2020 land-use plan and zoning map for 12.9 acres at 2151 West Washington Street to facilitate construction of a replacement Fire Station No. 1 and associated institutional uses.
Staff said the property is proposed to change from commercial and multifamily land use to institutional/government use and that the proposed zoning change would move the site from B-4 general business/warehousing and RM-3 multifamily to an I-1 institutional/public service district; the change would better accommodate accessory uses such as a training tower and cold storage that staff said are anticipated with a new fire station.
The commission voted to set the public hearings at the next available meeting (staff said timing would align with other required public-notice schedules), and staff recommended conducting both the land-use and zoning hearings concurrently. If hearings proceed, the matter will return to the commission and then to the Common Council for final action and any required development approvals.
