Joseph (Joe) Visseri told the board there are two changes to the district safety plan for the coming year: a requirement that parents be notified within one week of any drill and a change in response terminology to reduce confusion between "lockout" and "lockdown."
"There are only 2 changes this year to the, to the district plan," Visseri said. On the first change he explained parents will receive a prior notification within seven days of a drill: "It doesn't mean you have it has to be 7 days out. That means within that 7 days, you're gonna do that, to run that drill."
On the second change Visseri said the district will replace the existing "shell" acronym in posted diagrams because the state recommended revising terms; "lockout" will be relabeled "secure lockout" to avoid similarity with "lockdown." Visseri said the district will print new classroom forms and replace the old ones over the summer.
A board member asked whether the one‑week notification specifies the exact day or drill type; Visseri answered that the notice will only state that a drill will be performed within the next seven days and does not identify a specific day or the type of drill. He said principals have already been using similar notifications during the prior year.
Officer Hogwater and district staff were present for the hearing. The board approved adjournment of the district safety plan hearing by voice vote.
No other substantive changes to the safety plan were proposed at the hearing; the updates are described as wording and diagram changes to improve clarity and implementation.
