The mayor announced that a bill passed by the North Carolina General Assembly gives the town authority to partner with a nonprofit and a private partner to build 14 houses intended for disabled veterans and disabled first responders.
The mayor said the legislation required work through multiple committees and thanked legal staff and Representative Todd Carver and Senator Sawyer for support. He said the town is partnering with Lowe’s and Building Homes for Heroes and that the program will enable the town to construct 14 homes to be distributed to eligible disabled veterans and first responders.
The mayor said the town has been working behind the scenes and plans to make a public announcement as the project advances. He characterized the opportunity as unprecedented locally and said he believes Mooresville may be among the first towns in North Carolina to use the legislative change for this purpose. Commissioners expressed support and noted the project’s potential value to local veterans.
The announcement did not include a formal vote; staff said they will continue working on agreements and will return to the board with specifics for any required approvals.
