The Board of Commissioners adopted a resolution to change candidate filing fees for municipal elections from $5 to 1% of the pay of the office.
Town staff explained the change complies with state law authorizing municipalities to set filing fees as a percentage of the office’s pay; staff said the new policy aligns Mooresville with neighboring jurisdictions and discourages frivolous filings that can trigger costly primaries. The town manager and other speakers said the filing window opens Monday and the county needs notification by Thursday.
A motion to adopt the resolution was called for and recorded. A commissioner asked for the motion; the clerk indicated Commissioner Haven moved and Commissioner Duis seconded. The clerk called the voice vote and all present said “aye”; no opposing votes were recorded in the briefing and the mayor said he would file the change with the Board of Elections.
Staff and commissioners noted the filing fee revenue goes to the board of elections and not the town, and commissioners discussed that a modest fee helps ensure serious candidacies and reduces administrative costs for running elections.
