Board briefed on rezoning request so resident can serve on Historic Preservation Commission

Town planning staff asked the Board of Commissioners to consider a map amendment that would rezone a 0.69-acre parcel at 144 McNeal Lane from Iredell County Residential Agriculture to Town of Mooresville Residential Limited Service so the owner may serve on the town’s Historic Preservation Commission.
Erica Martin, planning director, said the rezoning follows a release of jurisdiction from Iredell County on June 17. North Carolina law requires members of local historic preservation commissions to reside within the local jurisdiction; Martin said Autry requested the jurisdictional release in order to qualify for service.
Martin said the property will remain outside Mooresville’s municipal limits but within the town’s extraterritorial jurisdiction; staff recommended the Residential Limited Service district because Autry is not seeking annexation or town utility service. The planning board unanimously recommended approval on June 24, Martin said.
Commissioners praised Autry’s willingness to volunteer and asked no substantive follow-up questions. The board did not vote during the briefing; staff presented the rezoning for consideration at a future meeting.
