The United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) welcomed a cessation of hostilities agreement signed in Aru over the weekend by six local armed groups in Ituri province.
The agreement was signed by Codeco, the Zaire Group, MAPI, FRPI, FPIC and Shinya Tuna, the briefing said. Vivian Vandepehr, deputy special representative of the secretary‑general and acting head of MONUSCO, said the pact “marks a significant step forward in the quest for stability in Ituri” and paves the way for reconciliation, security and development.
The UN said the agreement should open space for economic and social development in the affected area. The spokesperson presented the signing as a positive development while noting broader challenges across the country that the mission continues to monitor.
