Maury County Board members spent more than an hour discussing a proposed calendar of board retreats and work sessions and asked staff to propose outside facilitators and dates, with several members urging that one retreat be dedicated to academic performance and strategic planning.
Board member Mister Moore presented a multi-retreat outline that included governance and board effectiveness, facilities/capital planning and a winter strategic-planning session. “I feel very strongly that…school board retreats…are a valuable asset for this board, to have time to not always be up here in front of a lectern…where we can sit around and talk to each other and have some time to review these things with staff,” Moore said.
Several members, including Mister Plagman, Miss Stevenson and Mister Carter, pressed for a stronger academic focus and for a plan that produces measurable goals tied to the superintendent’s evaluation. “I want to know about the little guy…what are we doing to really target them?” a board member said, pressing for action steps for struggling students.
Staff (Miss Ventura) supported an outside, impartial facilitator with education expertise and proposed moving from the draft plan to a more concrete set of dates and facilitators. She requested board members submit suggestions for retreat topics and dates by the end of the week so central office could return with proposed facilitator availability and locations at the July work session.
Board members also discussed logistics including off-site locations, public notice requirements for retreats, and whether retreat notes or summaries should be produced for the public. The board agreed staff should gather facilitator options and open dates; the superintendent’s office and central staff said they would provide a menu of choices to the board for review.
